Kidnapping In Nigeria

10 Lafia University Students Kidnapped By Gunmen

Kidnapping by bandits and insurgents is among the biggest organized or gang crime in Nigeria and is a national security challenge

Ten students of University of Lafia State were kidnapped by gunmen believed to be Fulani herders on Thursday night. An eyewitness whose identity was not disclosed said that the men  invaded Gandu (a student area opposite the university) at 2am shooting and forcing students out of their hostels and this lasted for 2 hours without interruption.

Abubakar Ibrahim (the public relations officer of the university) said it is too early to know the exact number of students because the area the gunmen attacked was outside the school campus ,but three to five students may have been kidnapped and the university will make provision for students to be living within the school campus.

However , the students made a peaceful protest demanding for safety and end to kidnappings at the university.

One of the victims said: “We were five, alongside a lady. They (gunmen) beat and threatened us. They forced us to walk and run, at some point, all through the night. They later collected N500,000 from my parents and released me. I don’t know what happened to the rest because they could not afford to pay.”
